Bon Accord keeps it in the family with MBO

The owners of Aberdeen-based home improvement firm Bon Accord Glass is celebrating its 50th birthday by passing part control to their daughters in the form of a management-buy-out.

Bon Accord Glass, founded in 1974 by Aberdeen businessman Bryan Keith as a glazier business, now offers a wide range of services, including windows and doors, kitchens and other fitted furniture requirements, conservatory roof replacements, and other home improvement services.

Long-standing directors Colin Kinghorn and Martin Allan, who have a combined 75 years of experience, completed their own MBO of Bon Accord Glass in 2008. Now they are handing over the reins to a new generation of management within the company who, intriguingly, also have a combined 75 years of expertise.

The new owners of the business, which has 47 employees, are Director, Accounts & Administration and Colin’s daughter Michelle Kinghorn, Director Design & Sales and Martin’s daughter Danielle McAnespie, Director Operations- kitchens and living spaces Ian McDonald and Neil Wilson also a Director, Operations – kitchens & living spaces.

Kinghorn and Allan will remain actively involved with the firm as advisors, ‘ensuring continuity and providing support to the new team as they introduce their own ideas while maintaining the company’s core values of quality and excellence’.

Kinghorn said: “This is a proud moment for me personally and for the business as a whole. I am very confident that the new management team will continue to uphold the reputation for quality and customer care that Bon Accord Glass is known for. I look forward to supporting them as they take the business forward into the next 50 years.”

Allan said: “The four new directors all have experience across key areas of the business, and this will ensure continuity for our staff and our customers.”

Wilson said the new team’s goals are to bring in different ideas but maintain the traditions of the business. “We are fortunate to still have Colin and Martin’s continued guidance as we build on the firm’s impressive legacy,” he said.

Home improvement has been in a sweet-spot in recent years given uncertainty over the housing market and higher mortgage rates. Instead of buying new homes owners are increasingly looking to improve and refurbish their current property.
